Day 5: Deciding on Your First Fish – Choosing the Right Species for a New Aquarium

Choosing your first fish is an exciting moment in your aquarium journey. But picking the right species is about more than just aesthetics—it’s essential to choose fish that are hardy, adaptable, and suitable for the current stage of your tank. Day 5 is the perfect time to research fish options that will thrive in a newly set up tank while you continue monitoring water parameters and preparing for their arrival.

Key Considerations for Choosing Your First Fish

  1. Tank Size
Before deciding on fish, know your tank size and limitations. Many fish require more space than they initially seem to, and overcrowding can lead to stress, aggression, and poor water quality.
  2. Fish Hardiness
The first fish introduced to a new tank should be hardy species that can tolerate slight fluctuations in water parameters as the nitrogen cycle completes. These fish should be resilient to higher ammonia or nitrite levels that are common in the early stages of cycling.
  3. Temperament and Compatibility
Avoid adding fish that are aggressive or territorial right away. A peaceful community tank is ideal for beginners, as it’s easier to maintain a harmonious environment. Consider how the fish will interact with others if you plan to add more species later on.
  4. Beginner-Friendly Species
Look for species known to be beginner-friendly. These fish are generally low-maintenance, easy to care for, and forgiving of minor mistakes while you get accustomed to aquarium care.

!! It is important to not add too many fish as your nitrogen cycle is not ready. Add only 20% of the amount of fish that can be added into the tank.
