TYPE OF WATER CONDITIONER FOR AQUARIUM

WHAT ARE WATER CONDITIONER AND HOW DOES IT WORKS

Water straight from the tap usually have Chlorine, Chloromine and sometimes heavy metal that are harmful to fish resulting in death within half an hour. 
Adding water conditioner during water change helps to neutralize all above harmful element and make tap water safe for fishes and other invertebrates.

A GOOD WATER CONDITIONER SHOULD BE ABLE TO

1. Remove all harmful elements including chlorine, chloramine and heavy metal
2. Should be able to remove these harmful elements almost immediately

WHY ARE THESE HARMFUL ELEMENTS IN OUR TAP WATER?

CHLORAMINE

Chloramine are chemical compound that contain chlorine and ammonia that serves to purify our city water today. At certain level or concentration, they are used to kill germs when added in water but are still safe to drink. However, they are harmful for fishes and result in death very quickly.

Chloramine can also stay in the water longer than chlorine. (So please forget about standing your water overnight and think there are already safe to use for water change)

We do not recommend water condition that remove chlorine only. Chloramine is a mixed compound of chlorine and ammonia. These water conditioners will remove chlorine only, leaving ammonia in the water which is still toxic to the fishes.

HEAVY METAL

Heavy metal like copper, lead and zinc are harmful to fishes when they are at certain level.

Luckily there is no heavy metal contamination in Singapore tap water. So water conditioner that remove heavy metal are not as necessary.
