Indian Almond Tree (Terminalia Catappa)
The Indian Almond Tree is a tropical plant that belongs to the leadwood tree family of Combretaceae. It is known by other names such as; false kamani, kottamba, country almond, Indian almond, sea-almond.
The tree contains phytochemicals such as steroids, triterpenes, carbohydrates, triterpenoid saponins, alkaloids, polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins and glycosides.
The tree's broad leaves are dark green, leathery and glossy in appearance. The leaves contain phytosterols, saponins, flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol as well as tannins such as tercatin, punicalin and punicalagin.
Its seed is a rich source of protein (25.81%) and amino acids such as leucine, phenylalanine, isoleucine, histidine, valine, tryptophan, threonine, methionine, lysine and tyrosine.
The medicinal properties of T. catappa have been proven repeatedly in scientific studies:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antiparasite properties, including the eradication of Trichodina, Gyrodactylus sp. and Dactylogyrus sp.
- Antibacterial properties have been proven against many strains, both negative and positive, and T. catappa leaf extracts continue to be explored as an alternative to antibiotics for the fish industry
- Scientists have reported antifungal activity against Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotium rolfsii, and Aspergillus fumigatus
- Indian Almond Leaf extract has also been used successfully as an antifungal for Tilapia eggs

Acacia Catechu
The Acacia Catechu tree also known as the Senegalia or Black Catechu.
The heartwood, bark, and wood extract (called catechu) are used in traditional medicine. The concentrated aqueous extract, known as khayer gum or cutch, is astringent.
Catechu is an important article of trade in medicinal herbs since at least the 16th century, reaching Europe in the 17th century. It contains 25 - 60% tannins, 20 - 30% tannins, flavonoids and resins, and is valued mainly for its astringent qualities.
